New Bedford, MA, USA, September 29, 2019 – Fiber Optic Center, Inc., (FOC), an international leading distributor specializing in helping their customers make the best cable assemblies in the world, announces presentation, papers and tutorials on latest industry products at International Cable & Connectivity Symposium (IWCS) 2019 September 29-October 2, 2019, Charlotte, NC.
International Cable & Connectivity Symposium (IWCS), the premier worldwide conference for new technologies in cable and connectivity products, will have FOC contributing to both the Symposium Conference and Suppliers Exhibition.
At the IWCS Symposium Conference, Wayne M. Kachmar, owner of the international high technology consulting company Technical Horsepower Consulting, LLC. and FOC’s Optical Cable Expert has published the paper, Evaluation of 200um vs. 250um Coated Fibers for Non-traditional Cable.
As the demands for smaller, more compact optical and hybrid fiber optic cables increase, many cable designers may choose 200um coated fibers versus 250um coated fibers to allow tighter packing density. Existing fiber coating requirements may not provide enough data to properly evaluate the use of 200um fibers in non-traditional designs where fibers encounter materials and surfaces other than extruded polymers. This paper presents additional test methods to evaluate coating sensitivities, allowing cable designers to make informed choices in coatings based on specific parameters tested. Examples include sensitivity to powdered, water-swellable components; post-moisture ingress behavior; and direct contact with various strength member materials. Also explored is the ability of the coating to retain existing performance characteristics. Ultimately, the proposal is to add these test methods to the designer’s toolbox to minimize the number of steps required to successfully design a non-traditional optical micro cable or micro cable component.
Additionally, Mr. Kachmar will be a presenter of Evaluation of 200um vs. 250um Coated Fibers for Non-traditional Cable Designs at the Symposium covering the following topics:
- Why is this work being undertaken? What exists today?
- How we defined the additional tests
- Test results and Recommendations
FOC will be on the floor of the Suppliers Exhibition, Booth 115, with the latest developments from industry suppliers. In addition to a complete product line for cable assembly production, services, additional fiber applications and specialty applications, FOC is operating live discussions and demos of their online Solutions Centers with each of their Product Technical Experts.
The stations include for Cable Assembly Production: Fiber& Cable, Interconnect, Cable Prep, Hand Tools, Epoxy, Crimp, Cleave, Film, Polish, and Test.
Additional Fiber Applications and Specialty Applications include: Factory Fiber Processing, Splicing, Installation, Fiber/Cable Management, Cleaning, Consulting Services, Optical Plastics and Beyond Fiber.
Fiber Optic Center, Inc. is proud to have Ben Waite on Board of Directors for International Cable & Connectivity Symposium (IWCS) investing in the future of connectivity technology strategies and leadership. (Previous PR can be found here)

About Technical Horsepower Consulting, LLC
Technical Horsepower Consulting, LLC. (THC) is an international high technology consulting company. THC was incorporated by Wayne Kachmar and built on his 38+ years of optical cable industry experience. Wayne Kachmar has participated in many innovations and seen the maturing of the industry. Over the years, Wayne has been involved in many unique projects to provide optical cable in diverse environments such as the underwater ROV that penetrated the Titanic, as well as cable that is in service sensing sub-atomic particles in the Antarctic ice. Wayne developed a number of unique concepts and products using optical fibers as both information carriers and sensors where the cable became the sensor. These have included fiber laser ring gyroscope components and distributed acoustic sensors for terrestrial and underwater applications. As a principal investigator for many government sponsored projects, he has developed methods that push the state of the art in optical cable design and manufacture. Over his career, he has been able to fuse this state of the art knowledge with conventional fiber cable design to significantly cost reduce both materials and processes.
