Your EZ Check Precision Wear Gage kit will include a mandrel wear gage. A fixture bore no-go gage and two porthole no-go gages. Important: Take care in handling gauges. Any nicks, scratches or dings will result in false measurements. All gages require a light oil for corrosion resistance. There are three main wear points that your gages will identify. The machine mandrel wear from fixture changes. The fixture mounting hole wear from being mounted to the machine itself and the portholes wear from the connectors being inserted and removed.
Step two: The mandrel wear gauge. The mandrel wear gauge measures the machine mandrel outer diameter worn due to natural deterioration that occurs when the fixture is mounted repeatedly over time. The mandrel wear gauge has four measuring slots 50%, 100%, 200% and 300%. These represent OEM specifications. Begin at the 50% setting and check multiple locations around the mandrel as it most likely will not wear evenly. If the gage does not fully seat. Continue your checks in increasing increments until the gage will not seat. Important: The machine mandrel may be at 50% and still be within OEM specifications. It should be replaced at 100% or higher as it is out of tolerance and production yields will begin to decline.
Step three: The fixture bore no-go gage. The fixture bore no-go gage measures the diameter and wear of the inner fixture mounting hole due to natural deterioration that occurs when the fixture is mounted repeatedly over time. Hold the gage by the round end. The diamond-shaped end is used to measure wear in the fixture mounting hole and will detect if the center bore is wearing into an oval shape. Gently insert the diamond end into the fixture mounting hole tracking the fixture mounting hold in multiple locations. If the fixture bore no-go gage goes past the key way the fixture needs to be replaced.
Step four: The porthole no-go gage. The porthole no-go gage measures the natural deterioration that occurs when the connectors or fiber have been mounted to the fixture repeatedly over time. The resulting friction will cause the holes to enlarge. The porthole no-go gage comes in two sizes 1.25 millimeters and 2.5 millimeters. These measurements cover most fiber optic configurations, determine which diameter is needed, and gently insert the pin into the fixture porthole, checking top and bottom and in multiple locations due to the possibility of an uneven wear path. Ensure all holes are thoroughly measured if the porthole no-go gauge fits into a hole, the fixture needs to be replaced or important depending on the type of fixture. You may either use replacement inserts or purchase a new fixture.
