QUESTION: What kind of laser or amplifier performance can be expected from fibers made with the Halide Process?
ANSWER:
For Er doped fiber used in EDFA’s pumped at 1480 nm, efficiencies of ≈ 69% with optical gain of ≈ 35 dB have been demonstrated at 1550 nm. For Yb doped fiber in a high power (3 kW) fiber laser configuration, pumped at 980 nm and output at 1080 nm, a slope efficiency of 74% with respect to coupled pump power has been demonstrated. For Tm doped fiber with >8.5 wt.% Tm3+, a double clad fiber laser efficiency of 74.5% with respect to absorbed pump power has been demonstrated.
