Light Brigade is excited to announce that this will be its first year exhibiting and presenting at the BICSI Winter Conference held in Tampa Florida, February 4th – 8th.
2023 marks the celebration of 50 years of BICSI conferences. In support of the 2023 BICSI Winter Conference, Light Brigade has sponsored the Cabling Skills Challenge, which supports all BICSI-credentialed Installers and Technicians.
Light Brigade’s Technical Director, Sean Kelly, will be presenting a Pre-Conference Masterclasses. The Pre-Conference Masterclass: Help Close the Digital Divide – FTTx Outside Plant Design. This masterclass will focus on the proper design of FTTx point-to-point and point-to-multipoint passive optical networks (PON) with home-run, centralized, and distributed topologies. Students will learn about the importance of customer take rate and density, and how they apply to your design. The masterclass will review various network configurations, design benchmarks, and installation parameters for FTTx systems. Economic node location decisions based on various architectures will be examined, followed by a PON vs. Active Ethernet architecture comparison, including how each is used and best practice design considerations. Cabling design strategies, including home-run, centralized, and distributed, will be contrasted, as well as comparing distributed, centralized, and tap split architectures. Fundamental design steps of FTTx, including splitter location, termination techniques, and installation methods as they relate to take rate and futureproofing will be discussed. Finally, co-existence with the next generation of FTTx systems, future growth and migration, and fiber sizing will be explored.

In addition, to the Pre-Conference Masterclass, Sean Kelly, will also be presenting on Outside Plant Emerging Fiber Applications and Trends. This session will explore new and expanding fiber applications, such as wireless and sensing in adjacent markets. Neither application is entirely new to fiber, but recent advancements such as 5G microcells and advanced sensing applications are driving new and unique fiber-rich deployments. The presentation will highlight the unique aspects and practices of each and compare how they are similar to familiar applications and concepts. The session will also cover the rapidly expanding deployment method of air-blown fiber, including benefits, components, and common deployment and installation methods.
