Couplers and WDMs
Couplers can divide a single input into multiple outputs (splitters) or merge multiple inputs into a single output (combiners), making them essential for distributing signals in networks like FTTH (Fiber to the Home). Couplers vary in split ratios, such as 1x2 or 1x4, depending on the application. Multiplexers are paired with demultiplexers to separate the signals at the receiving end. Multiplexers are fundamental in high-capacity networks like DWDM systems. Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WDMs) are a specific type of multiplexers that combine or separate optical signals based on their wavelengths. They enable multiple data streams to travel over a single fiber, significantly increasing network capacity. WDMs come in two main forms: Coarse (CWDM) for wider wavelength spacing and Dense (DWDM) for tighter spacing, catering to different bandwidth and distance requirements.
